Local 4-H has a positive effect on local youth!

The Alexander 4-H & Youth Program provides programs for all youth in Alexander County -- not just 4-H members. All United Way funds that are received are spent on services that directly reach youth and adult volunteers in Alexander County. No funds are spent on staff, facility, or program maintenance expenses. The 4-H program is the youth component of the North Carolina Cooperative Extension- Alexander County Center and serves youth ages 5-18.

The United Way funding helps provide educational programs to 610 youth in 34 community and after school clubs, reach 762 youth through six hours of special interest educational programs, and provide school enrichment programs such as embryology and other science curriculum to 153 classrooms and 3420 youth.

Also United Way funds 4-H scholarships to limited resource families to attend workshops, day camps and overnight residential camps.  In 2009, the Alexander County 4-H Program reached 4621 youth with educational programs and activities. Most importantly the money received from United Way provides teen and adult volunteer leadership training to the 794 volunteers that help implement the 4-H program.

Alexander County 4-H Program would not be able to reach the number of youth that they reach each year if it were not for the financial support from United Way of Alexander County. Remember that the 4-H program serves all youth in Alexander County not just 4-H members.

For more information about involving you or your child in the Alexander 4-H Program, contact Suzanne Rhinehart, Extension Agent, 4-H Youth Development at 632-3125.
